Amomum subulatum

Amomum subulatum Roxb., Zingiberaceae, is the greater or Nepal or large cardamom, cultivated in the swampy places in Nepal, Sikkim, Bengal, and Assam. The fruits and the seeds are illustrated.

The seeds are stomachic, useful in nerualgia, used in gonorrhoea, considered as an aphrodisiac and an antidote to scorpion sting and snake bite.

Te oil from the seed is aromatic, stimulant, stomachic and applied to the eye lids to allay inflammation.

The seeds are used to flavour a variety of food preparations and as a substitute for the true cardamom (see Elettaria cardamomum).

Essential oils in the seeds are the active constituent.
