Coleus amboinicus

 

 

Coleus amboinicus Lour., (= Coleus aromaticus Benth.), Indian borage, Lamiaceae, is wild in Rajasthan but is cultivated throughout India.   The thick and rather fleshy leaves (Coleus amboinicus1) are pungent and have the aroma of carum.  

The decoction of the leaves is given in cough, asthma, vaginal discharges and urinary diseases.

The leaves are used as a flavouring in various preparations or eaten fresh for its carminative effects.

The leaves contain essential oils that include carvacrol.
