Curcuma amada

Curcuma amada Roxb., mango ginger, Zingiberaceae, believed to be a native of Bengal, is cultivated throughout India and also occurs in the Andaman islands.   The species is distinctive both from the inflorescences (Curcuma amada1) and the mango flavoured rhizomes (Curcuma amada2).

The rhizomes are a favourite condiment and vegetable due to the rich flavour of raw mango.

The essential oils in the rhizome make it useful as a carminative and stomachic.   The pulped rhizome is also used on contusions and sprains.
