Golden rice |
Golden Rice is the first consumer oriented transgenic variety of rice, containing genes for the synthesis of b-carotenoid, the precursor of vitamin A. Genes from the bacterium Erwinia uredovora and the temperate garden plant daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) for the synthesis of b-carotenoid impart the ability to synthesise b-carotenoid, which gives the yellow colour to the transgenic variety. Golden Rice1 shows a mxture of normal rice and Golden Rice, while Golden Rice2 is a pure sample of Golden Rice. This is a temperate variety of rice with transgenes. Consuming Golden Rice provides for some amount of the vitamin precursor. Now efforts are being made to develop a tropical variety of Golden Rice. This is expected to save millions of children from blindness and death, and adults from several vitamin A deficiency diseases. |
