Kigelia africana (Lam.) Benth., (= Kigelia pinnata (Jacq.) DC.), sausage tree, Bignoniaceae, a native Africa, has 16 synonyms. The species is now naturalised and widely planted as an ornamental/avenue tree in India. The flowers are conspicuous and the fruits are distinctive (Kigelia africana1). In South Africa the fruits are used as a dressing for ulcers and as a galactagogue. In Ghana the fruit and the roots are used in curing menstrual problems. In Northern Nigeria the fruit is used as a purgative and in some other places to treat dysentery. In Kenya, the bark and leaves are used as an abortifacient. The unripe fruit is toxic. The medicinal uses of this species in the African continent are unknown in India. The bark, leaves and the fruit pulp contain several flavonoids and glycosides. |
