  Piper cubeba

Piper cubeba L.f., Piperaceae, the tailed pepper, is in cultivation in India.

The fruits (Piper cubeba1), called cubebs,  are used as an aromatic stimulant, local irritant, diuretic, carminative, sedative and in dysentery.   They are also used in rheumatism, gonorrhoea and bronchial troubles.

The fruits are also used as spice, like the other peppers, to flavour bitters, cigarettes and condiment.

A sesquiterpene  essential oil and an alkaloid cubebin are extracted from the fruits..
